Em suas andanças pelo castigado sertão brasileiro, o tropeiro Ricardo Valeriano Brandão encontra a família de Raimundo Alves – gente miserável que aceita qualquer coisa por um pedaço de carne seca ou um punhado de sal. E o velho Raimundo não hesita em oferecer a filha mais velha, a bela e simplória Maria, em troca de alguns mantimentos, pois sabe que ela terá uma vida melhor se for embora com o desconhecido – e será uma boca a menos a saciar. Ricardo aceita a oferta mas libera Maria de seu compromisso de partir consigo. A moça prefere permanecer ao lado dos irmãos mais novos e Ricardo parte rumo ao seu destino, deixando para trás a imagem da bela sertaneja esfomeada que não lhe sairá da cabeça. Maria, por sua vez, também não consegue esquecer o seu bem-feitor e nutre a esperança de que algum dia ele retorne para tirar-lhe daquela vida miserável. No movimentado povoado de Xique-Xique, na Chapada Diamantina, Ricardo se depara com uma moça idêntica a Maria Alves, não fosse suas vestes e seus modos de mulher fina e despachada. Vai ter com ela crente de que era a mesma esfomeada que deixara semanas antes no sertão, mas a moça não gosta dos modos do tropeiro e o trata com desdém. Sentindo-se desprezado e completamente atordoado, Ricardo humilha a moça diante de todos, o que provoca os brios dos amigos dela, prontos a lhe defender. Na fuga Ricardo mata acidentalmente um dos valentões e temeroso de seu destino parte para os garimpos. Nesse mesmo tempo, chega a Xique-Xique, a senhora Dona Rosária e uma moça que acolhera – a sertaneja Maria Alves que deixara a família após a morte do pai para tentar a vida e reencontrar seu tropeiro bem-feitor. Na nova cidade, Maria começa a ser confundida com a mais ilustre figura local: Maria Dusá. Mulher deslumbrante, de fino trato, desejada pelos homens e invejada pelas mulheres, Dusá é uma criatura expansiva e de grande influência entre os poderosos das redondezas. Em pouco tempo fica sabendo da presença de sua sósia na cidade, o que lhe faz lembrar do incidente com o tropeiro que a insultara. Curiosa, ela mesma vai conhecer a outra Maria e fica sabendo da triste história da moça pobre que perdera a família por conta da miséria, e cujo objetivo na vida era reencontrar o seu grande amor. Disposta a ajudar Mariazinha (como passa a tratá-la), Dusá parte no encalço de Ricardo para defazer o mal-entendido e levá-lo de volta aos braços de sua amada. Mas Ricardo Valeriano Brandão tornara-se um homem amargo e desiludido, o que lhe deu forças para enriquecer nos garimpos e esquecer aquela que o fizera sofrer. In his wanderings through the punished Brazilian hinterland, drover Ricardo Valeriano Brandão meets Raimundo Alves' family – miserable people who accept anything for a piece of dried meat or a handful of salt. And old Raimundo does not hesitate to offer his eldest daughter, the beautiful and simple-minded Maria, in exchange for some supplies, because he knows that she will have a better life if she leaves with the unknown – and it will be one less mouth to satiate. Ricardo accepts the offer but releases Maria from her commitment to leave with him. The girl prefers to remain with her younger siblings, and Ricardo sets off towards his destination, leaving behind the image of the beautiful, hungry backcountry woman who will not leave his mind. Maria, for her part, cannot forget her benefactor either, and she hopes that one day he will return to take her away from that miserable life. In the bustling town of Xique-Xique, on Chapada Diamantina, Ricardo comes across a girl identical to Maria Alves, were it not for her dress and the manner of a refined and quick woman. He goes to her, believing that she was the same hungry woman he left weeks earlier in the backlands, but the girl doesn't like the muleteer's manner and treats him with disdain. Feeling despised and completely stunned, Ricardo humiliates the girl in front of everyone, which provokes the pride of her friends, ready to defend him. In his escape Ricardo accidentally kills one of the bullies and, fearful of his fate, he leaves for the mines. At the same time, Mrs. Dona Rosária and a young woman she had taken in arrived in Xique-Xique – the country woman Maria Alves, who had left her family after her father's death to try to make a living and rediscover her well-behaved drover. In the new city, Maria begins to be confused with the most illustrious local figure: Maria Dusá. A dazzling, fine-grained woman, desired by men and envied by women, Dusá is an expansive creature of great influence among the powerful around. Before long, she learns of the presence of her double in the city, which reminds her of the incident with the drover who had insulted her. Curious, she herself goes to meet the other Maria and learns about the sad story of the poor girl who lost her family to poverty, and whose goal in life was to find her great love. Willing to help Mariazinha (as she starts to treat her), Dusá sets off in pursuit of Ricardo to clear up the misunderstanding and take him back to his beloved's arms. But Ricardo Valeriano Brandão had become a bitter and disillusioned man, which gave him the strength to enrich himself in the mines and forget the one that had made him suffer.
